It Should Be Your Party, So I'll Cry If I Want To

No, that is not Stella dressed up as a little boy.
That is my dear old dad approximately 48 years ago.
Doesn't the picture just melt your heart?  We all love it.

Today is my dad's birthday.
Fifty years ago today Tony Scott Hansen was born.
Yes, his name is Tony.
No, no one has ever called him that.  Except for telemarketers.
Always knew when they were calling.

Right now I am feeling okay.
I feel like I miss him and I feel like he should be alive to celebrate this big milestone.
Last night, however; I was a wreck.
I was angry and hysterical and really sad and really confused at all of the unknown reasons we had to loose him.

But then Ryan reminded me that my Dad wouldn't want us to spend the day crying.
He would hardly want us to spend the entire day remembering him and carrying on.
But that is what I am going to do.
I am going to remember him and even miss him.
But I am going to try and keep the tears to a minimum today.

Because even if he is isn't alive to celebrate with today, he lived a life completely worth celebrating.

He was funny.  So dang funny.
He was loving.
He was smart.
He always thought he was right.  And most of the time he was.
He was organized.
He was a perfectionist.
He was an awesome teacher.
He was a spectacular coach.
He was a steadfast Latter Day Saint.
He was a fun loving, always teasing son, brother, and uncle.
He was a loving grandfather.
He cared for and admired his children so much.
He worshiped his wife and would do anything to make her happy.

I was actually there last year to celebrate his birthday with him.
We had gone west to show off our new baby girl.
That trip was the first time he was able to meet Stella and was the same trip he stood with other righteous priesthood leaders to give her a name and a blessing.
He wasn't feeling great.  He was always good at trying to fake it, but we knew it was hard for him.
I think he spent most of his birthday bash upstairs resting, but I love that I was there.
In the end I am glad I was able to give him one last birthday hug and kiss, and maybe even sing him a little Happy Birthday song.

Happy birthday, Dad.
I miss you..
I have realized I always will.
Hope your day is special up there.  Either way we are remembering it down here.
I'll eat a Grasshopper cookie or two for you, and maybe even let Stella have one just to make you smile.

You can cry if you want to, everything is going to be such an adjustment. I wish that he was here with you but I am grateful he was such a great man because we really do have so much to celebrate about it him and his life. Happy birthday Scott.

Happy birthday to your sweet Angel Dad!!

Love that picture of him. Stella definitely has his genes.

I think it's so cool that not only do we get brains and heart and interests from our loved ones, but we even get really great reminders of them in appearance...like blue eyes.:)
