The first Friday in March is quickly becoming one of my favorite days of the year. It isn't my birthday, a holiday, or our anniversary (well, most years at least). No, the reason I have grown to love this day so much is each of you, wearing blue.
You guys never cease to amaze us with your endless love and support! Thank you for helping us to increase colon cancer awareness and encourage others to get screened. It is so important! The Colon Cancer Alliance reports that this year alone, nearly 51,000 people will die from colon cancer. That is 51,000 fathers, mothers, children, sisters, brothers, grandmas, grandpas, and friends too many. Not to mention all the people left to pick up the pieces and move on in this life without their loved ones by their side. The good news is that if every person over age 50 were to get screened for colon cancer, nearly 80% of those deaths could be prevented. Wow! Regular screenings are so important, so if you are not at risk because of age or family history, make sure that those people you know who do fall into these categories know the statistics and how important their health is to you.
Our sweet dad was only 45 when he was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. There was no family history and any “symptoms” only began to appear a few months before diagnosis. The current recommendations for detection wouldn't have helped to save his life, but I know it can save someone else’s. And even if it is only one person, it helps to give his untimely death a bit of purpose.
