I think I have said this before, but cancer sucks.
That being said, it is important that we talk about cancer, that we study cancer, that we recognize the awful monster that it is.
We must do all of these things with one goal in mind:
Finding a cure.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
It is a time to get the word out about colon cancer and it's effects.
To let people know that colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
That around 150,000 Americans will be face such a diagnosis every year.
That colon cancer usually has no obvious symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage.
That at least by the age 50 you should have a colonoscopy to determine your risk.
I don't think that anything would have changed the outcome of my dad's life or fight with cancer.
He was only 45 when he was diagnosed, and doctors assume the initial tumor had formed nearly 8 years prior to that.
There was no indication that something was wrong until it was too late.
But for many others there is reason to get checked.
And even if you have no family history or you are only 35, it is important to take a proactive approach to your health.
Be aware.
Be willing to ask your doctor questions.
Do what you can to prevent yourself and your loved the ones the pain and fear that come with an advanced stage diagnosis.
Friday, March 4th is Dress in Blue Day.
Join me in dressing in blue to promote awareness.
Do it for yourself, your family, your friends, or like me; do it for him.
