Those Summer Nights

So although a lot of our summer weekends have been spent traveling, we have also enjoyed our summer nights at home in good old C-town. Last weekend we decided to visit the Franklin County Fair for some good old fashioned farm animals, tractor pulls, and tasty fair cuisine.

Lets just say that a fair in Ohio is not much different then a fair in Idaho. Same friendly folk, same lovely barnyard smell, and leaving the fair asking yourself the same big question, "Why did we come here again?" Just kidding. It was fun to get out and do something different and no one could believe I was watching the first tractor pull of my life. All those years in Idaho and I never had the pleasure.

Don't you love these little piggies? Cuddling the night away in their honeymoon stall. So sweet.

They were having a contest to see whose animal could look the most like a giant cotton ball. Okay, they really weren't but animals looking like this seemed to be a theme in the barnyard. I blame the humidity, they should too.

When we decided we were going to the fair all I wanted was a Tiger Ear. You Idahoans know what I am talking about. Those delicious 10,000 calorie treats we can always count on being served up at the Eastern Idaho State Fair each year are just too good. Sadly there are no Tiger Ears in Ohio, but Elephant Ears were available. I opted for that, but 10,000 calories later I must admit I didn't receive the same savory satisfaction that brings justice to those 2 lbs. gained.

I also now have a list of books to read a half mile long. All the books I wanted to read were checked out, so I reserved about 10 thinking they would all come in at different times. Well in the last two days 6 books have become available. So, I will be spending a lot of time reading in the next few weeks. Not a bad way to spend some warm summer evenings or slow hours at the WIC office, right? Currently I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. I am already half done with it. Such horrific and ugly events recounted in such beautiful language. The rest of the list includes Life of Pi, The Zookeepers Wife (another book about the Holocaust), The Lovely Bones, The Last Lecture, and Handle with Care. So if any of you have read some of these and want to give me any feedback as to what to keep on my list and what to ditch feel free. Otherwise, happy reading to me.
Summer is great. Grilling out, farmer's markets, and sunshine! Love them all. The only thing we are missing are our summer nights at the baseball park. And we are BOTH missing those this year. The MLB games are fun to go watch, but Ryan just doesn't get the same thrill watching someone else hit a double and I miss taking pictures of my hubby in the outfield.
P.S. Summer still rocks my socks. Please stay.

Night really is a great book, in a sad horrible way. I can't believe the thigns they went through. If you like those, maybe you should read The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas. I still need to read the book but I watched the movie and it was great.

Agreed...the fair was awesome. I wish we could have caught the demolition derby rather than the tractor pull, but oh well. I love your list of books! Lots of good ones. Glad everything else is going well!

Okay, I read Life of Pi when I was pregnant with Jack. Maybe it was because I was prego, but I really despised that wierdo of a story. But, your sister, Kyrsten, I think listened to it in the car last summer and enjoyed it. I am actually about 30 pages into the Zookeepers Wife. So far I like it. Love ya!

Summers are so wonderful. I can't believe its just about August though. We'll have to pack the fun in before it goes away! Sad to say, I have no clue what a tigers ear or an elephant ear is. I must not have lived in Idaho long enough to know. How about ice cream pototoes though, did they have those?

I have read all of those books except The Lovely Bones. Night is one of my favorite books of all time and I read it probably once every year. I know you will enjoy all of the other ones as well. I recommend The Shack as well as Outliers and Three Cups of Tea.

Gosh, everytime I read your posts I am amazed at what a good writer you are. Have I ever told you how creative you are. You may think it's dumb or simple that I'm commenting on this, but you blow me away and I love reading your stuff. You know, You should write books. Haven't you talked about doing that before? I would read them. Thanks for inspiring me.
Looks like the fair was fun. Glad your summer is going well!

Hey Tar, I also love to read your blog. It is like reading a awsome essay every time. Your writing ability comes out. A book would be fun. Your comments on Kyrst's post made me laugh. The weather and not being able to afford everyones trip out. We could have a week of girls nights by driving out. I was just deciding that in August one of my watch parties might have to be tickets to fly to Ohio with Taigs and kyrst and me to have a girls night out. Sounds good huh. I love you and Ryan and my little grand baby!!! mom
